Description
Barbara Helmich sent in a set of three photos which show the Weehawken Firing Squad in 1959. She writes: I believe the firing squad was comprised of Weehawken veterans. They always marched in the Memorial Day parade. The parade was a big deal. The start alternated between downtown and Highpoint Ave/Gregory Ave. Once we reached Park Ave we marched up to 50th St and then cut over to Boulevard East. It ended at Hamilton Park. All the participants were treated to an ice cream. The Mayor would address everyone, music played and the Firing Squad did a gun salute, firing over the Veteran's Memorial statue. Those parades and the Macy's 4th of July fireworks (which were set off right in front of us on the Hudson) were really big deals. These 3 photos are from what I think was the 100th Centennial parade; my Dad (Walter Helmich) and Charlie Lachenauer (another fireman) on Dodd St., and Dad on the Boulevard after the parade.
