Description

Poster from a Weehawken mayoral campaign for the Weehawken and You ticket. The poster promotes Mayor Stanley D. Iacono for Candidate at Large, Edward M. Keating for Candidate at Large, and James P. Reilly for 2nd Ward Candidate. Weehawken and You promised Good Government, Reduced Taxes and Tenant Protection. According to Joel Simon: "It must have been from 1986, when these three gentlemen ran (all successfully) for the Township Council. This was the second election under the present-day council-manager system in Weehawken which went into effect in 1982. Under this system, as you know, all five council members are elected every four years: One from each of the three wards, and two at-large. The council itself chooses a mayor and deputy member from its own ranks. Thus Stanley Iacono served as mayor under this system (he had previously been mayor for three two-year terms under the old regime) from 1982 to 1990, when he retired (for the second time) and was replaced by a gentleman by the name of Richard Turner. Thanks for the information, Joel! I found this poster out with the garbage on Hauxhurst Avenue. If you have Weehawken history in your basement, don't trash it - donate it to the Historical Commission for preservation!
