William Peter Van Ness was Aaron Burr's second in the infamous duel with Alexander Hamilton, which took place in Weehawken on July 11, 1804. This engraving is from the book Aaron Burr; a biography written, in large part, from original and hitherto unused material, by Samuel H. Wandell and Meade Minnigerode. New York, Putnam, 1927.
