From 1956 through the 1970s, there was serious talk of replacing Palisade Avenue with a 10 lane freeway, connecting I-78 in Jersey City with the George Washington Bridge. The new highway, which would have been NJ Route 85 was never built. You can read the story of this road that never was on the nycroads.com web site.
