Description

From 1867 through 1969, the Sanborn Map Company produced highly detailed maps of urban areas in order to allow fire insurance agents to better assess risks when writing policies.

These were large maps, drawn on 21 by 25 foot sheets of paper and scaled at 50 feet to the inch. Sanborn maps documented not only the streets of a town or city, but also the construction and purpose of most buildings. The maps also included information about water supplies, as this was of interest to the fire insurance community.

The maps on this site were drawn in 1900 by the Sanborn Map Company. Unlike many of the maps drawn by Sanborn, these are in black and white rather than color.
