Description

From the New York Times - December 29, 1931. Mrs. Grauert Glad to Quit. But Weehawken's 73 Year Old Mayor Found Job Nice. Mrs. Clara E. Grauert, Weehawken's 73 year old Republican woman Mayor, will gladly relinquish her office to Mayor-elect John Meister, Democrat, on Jan. 1. The little white haired woman who was named to the post last April by the Township Committee to fill the unexpired term of her late husband, Emile Grauert, who had served for twenty one years, reviewed her experience last night at her home, 22 Bonn Place. It was nice, she said. They didn't expect much of me. I'm not so young. But I was glad to serve. I think we did all we could to relieve unemployment in the town and I'm still very much interested in that. I presided at a few meetings. One thing, I was very happy to marry about 150 couples.
